Diabetes Intensive CE Series (March 2012)Monday, March 5, 2012 at 1:00 PM - Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at 8:00 PM (ET) |
|
Diabetes prevalence is rapidly increasing with 1,600,000 new cases of diabetes diagnosed every year. The healthcare challenges associated with this chronic disease necessitate competent, knowledgeable healthcare professionals who provide patients with the most current treatment strategies. The Diabetes Intensive CE Series gives healthcare providers the current knowledge about the diagnosis, pathology and treatment of diabetes mellitus.
This continuing education series in a blended learning format will highlight the types of diabetes, discuss monitoring blood sugar levels, explain techniques for promoting safe medication use, integrate nutritional and activity treatment approaches, describe management issues for special populations, and review the qualifications for certified diabetes educators (CDE). This six-week, self-paced, comprehensive series will also prepare eligible diabetes educators with the essential information to take the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE) exam. Complete the online examination and earn 30.0 contact hours (nurses)/30.0 CPEUs (dieticians) and a certificate of completion.
ONLINE MODULE:
The series of online modules have been specifically chosen to provide healthcare providers with evidence-based information on diabetes management.
WEBINAR COURSES:
All webinars will coincide with each week’s assigned online module. All webinars are presented by Tracey Long, RN, BSN, MS, CDE.
A Sweet Explanation of Diabetes Pathophysiology: What is “normal metabolism” and how does that correlate with a persons’ use of food/fuels and the unique pathophysiological changes occurring in Diabetes Mellitus? This webinar will discuss metabolism and will define the different types of diabetes and distinguishing features between them.
Monitoring and Medications: Which type of monitoring device is right for which type of patient? What types of medications are now available for managing diabetes? Learn about the purpose and process of blood glucose monitoring, and list the classes of medications now being offered for pharmacological management of diabetes mellitus.
Management Strategies: Participants will identify the options and guidelines for meal planning and exercise for persons with diabetes mellitus.
Complications of Diabetes and Managing Special Populations: Hypoglycemic protocols? Managing school-age children with diabetes? Special populations and others can be more at risk for the complications of diabetes. Learn three diabetic emergencies (acute complications) and body systems affected from chronic hyperglycemia.
Facilitating Behavior Change and Self-Management: The diagnosis of diabetes changes a person’s lifestyle and can add a level of stress and anxiety not anticipated by the patient. Participants will identify three theories of behavior change and three approaches to problem solving for self-management behaviors.
Becoming a Diabetes Educator and Taking the National Exam: Participants will identify five teaching strategies used in teaching diabetes topics, and explain the process to become a Certified Diabetes Educator.
